Literary skills like point of view, mood, dialogue, imagery, and conflict aren’t new to our students. But even when students can identify these skills in a text, they may not always see how they fit into the bigger picture of an author’s craft. In this bonus episode, I’m sharing Voices in Lit!, an original podcast series I created for middle and high school students that uses fictional interviews with classic authors to help students explore familiar literary skills from the writer’s perspective.

I’ll share why I chose classic authors for the series, how each author is intentionally paired with a literary focus, and what a Voices in Lit lesson can look like in the classroom. We’ll take a closer look at Edgar Allan Poe and mood as an example, including how students move from building background knowledge to listening, guided practice, and writing. If you’re looking for a fresh way to reinforce author’s craft while introducing students to classic writers, this episode will give you a closer look at how Voices in Lit! can fit into the ELA classroom.
