In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Joe Kort, a board-certified clinical sexologist, therapist, author, and founder of the Center for Relationship and Sexual Health in Royal Oak, Michigan. For over 40 years, Dr. Kort has worked with individuals and couples on sexual health, trauma, mixed orientation marriages, and LGBTQIA+ issues. He shares how growing up gay in the 1970s, coming out to his family, and meeting a supportive therapist as a teenager led him into this work. From there, we explore some of his most talked-about areas of practice: straight-identified men who have sex with men, the difference between sexual orientation and erotic orientation, and why behavior alone doesn’t define identity. We also talk about the realities of mixed orientation marriages, how couples sometimes stay together, when they don’t, and why it’s crucial that therapists avoid pushing their own bias about whether a couple “should” separate. Dr. Kort also discusses trauma, conversion therapy, internalized homophobia, and how erotic shame shows up in the therapy room.Toward the end of the episode, he opens up about being in a neurodivergent relationship, his viral TikTok content on autism and relationships, and what he wishes he’d told his younger therapist self about work, pace, and burnout as he moves into his sixties.
