Josh Clipperton of The Canadian Press joined Nick Alberga & Jay Rosehill to break down the biggest stories around the NHL and the Maple Leafs.
The conversation started with Amazon Prime acquiring the exclusive Canadian rights to Wednesday Night Hockey from Rogers and what it could mean for hockey fans. Clipperton weighed in on the growing cost of following the sport and questioned whether another streaming subscription could hurt accessibility.
From there, the guys discussed Macklin Celebrini's massive new contract extension and what the NHL's exploding salary cap could mean moving forward. They debated the possibility of future buyer's remorse on some of these mega deals, the emergence of teams operating with internal salary caps, and what it all could mean for Gavin McKenna's next contract if he lives up to the hype.
Clipperton also shared his expectations for McKenna's rookie season in Toronto, discussed whether the Maple Leafs' reputation as hockey's toughest market is deserved, and explained why he believes the pressure from the media is often overstated. He also reflected on Mitch Marner's "treated like gods" comment and the importance of accountability within the organization.
To wrap things up, Clipperton gave his outlook on the Leafs entering the 2026-27 season, explained why he's less optimistic than many of his colleagues, and weighed in on Morgan Rielly's future, saying his gut still tells him the veteran defenceman will be in Toronto on opening night.
