Lizzie Borden took an axe... or did she? More than 130 years after Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered, no one can say for certain who wielded the weapon. In this special Castle of Spirits episode, Vince and Jane reopen the Lizzie Borden case, talk through the leading alternative theories and suspects, and compare their own suspicions about which explanation best fits the strange evidence left behind.
Could a mysterious stranger have entered the Borden home? Could the family’s maid, Bridget Sullivan, have acted alone—or with Lizzie? Was William Borden, a man alleged to have been Andrew’s illegitimate son, involved? And could Lizzie and her sister Emma have conspired together?
After weighing each possibility, the mystery returns to the question at the heart of the case: Was Lizzie guilty, wrongly accused, or has the truth been hiding somewhere else all along?
And because the Borden house now operates as a bed-and-breakfast—one reportedly haunted by its violent past—Ghostkeeper Jane reads two true bed-and-breakfast haunting stories from the Castle of Spirits archive: “Bed and Breakfast,” submitted by Brittney from Virginia, USA, in October 2016, and “The Man in the Uniform,” submitted by Alexis from Auckland, New Zealand, in May 2006.
