Most people know what affirmations are, but don’t really understand how or why they work. An affirmation is simply a positive statement about oneself that is repeated often, in order to program the subconscious mind for success. The idea is that if you tell yourself something often enough, eventually you will believe it and start acting accordingly.
There are a few different theories on why affirmations work, but the most likely explanation is that they take advantage of the placebo effect. The placebo effect is a psychological phenomenon in which a person experiences positive results simply because they believe that they will. In other words, if someone believes that an affirmation will help them achieve their goal, it’s very likely that it actually will – even if it’s just in their own mind.
