Your lights do not go out only because of storms or hackers. Sometimes they go out because the grid is being asked to do more than it was built to do, and the strain is already showing up during extreme heat. I walk through a recent, real-time grid emergency on the PJM Interconnection system where demand pushed into record territory and the Department of Energy issued emergency orders to keep the system stable. That detail matters because it turns “someday” risk into “this just happened” reality.

Then I get into what is driving the surge: data centers and the AI boom. A single facility can pull the electricity of a major city, and Northern Virginia has become the largest data center hub in the world. We talk about how that growth affects regular people through higher bills, tighter capacity margins, and tough choices during peak load events. I also share what NERC is warning about when it says the grid is only “adequate under normal conditions,” and why heat waves are exactly the kind of non-normal event that exposes weak generation, transmission, and demand planning.

We also look overseas for a cautionary tale. Europe’s record heat shows how demand spikes, lower wind output, solar drop-off at evening peak, and nuclear plant cooling limits can collide to create outages and brutal electricity prices. Finally, I bring it back to practical preparedness: how to use hot weather alerts as a 48-hour checklist, why cooling one room beats trying to run central AC, how generator output drops in high heat, smart fuel storage in summer, and what to know about demand response and smart thermostat control.

If you want a clear, common sense plan for staying safe and comfortable when the grid gets tight, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show.
