If a door opens inward, it does not matter how hard you push.
That is the trouble with most well-being advice. It hands you techniques without checkingwhether your assumptions about how experience actually works are accurate. Meditation, routines, physical health, the people around you: all of it matters, and none of itcompensates for pushing in the wrong direction.
This first episode of Season 3 makes the case that understanding is the single mostimportant variable for well-being, mental health and personal development. Understandinghere means something specific: whether the assumptions we hold about our own experience, and about our nature as human beings, are in tune with how things really work.
Humanity tried to build flying machines for centuries. No quantity of effort produced oneuntil the fundamental principles of flight and gravity were understood. Once they were, the engineering followed quickly. Well-being works the same way. A practice you do notunderstand can still work, and it will not survive the next real challenge.
There is one more thing about understanding. Once you genuinely see something, it is yours. Clarity still comes and goes, and you can lose sight of what you have already seen. You know where to look for it.
