Heavy rainfall has battered Chennai, causing severe waterlogging in several neighbourhoods and disrupting traffic. Parts of the city recorded more than 30 cm of rain overnight, raising fresh concerns about drainage infrastructure, flood preparedness and the effectiveness of monsoon mitigation measures. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Ripon Building to review the situation, assess relief operations and direct officials to intensify flood-prevention work. The government reported that flood-prone areas had been identified and relief centres prepared for residents affected by the downpour. Vijay had also instructed ministers appointed to oversee Chennai’s zones to return to the city and supervise relief and rescue operations. The absence of Chennai Mayor R. Priya from the inspection meeting, along with questions about the participation of other elected civic representatives, has sparked political debate. Opposition leaders have questioned the government’s preparedness and response time, while the administration has highlighted the deployment of civic workers, equipment and emergency resources.
Were sufficient precautions taken before the heavy rain? Why were some ministers and civic representatives reportedly absent from key reviews? How much progress has been made on Chennai’s long-term drainage and flood-control projects? In this episode, we examine the government’s response, the questions raised by the DMK and other political voices, and the challenges facing Chennai as the northeast monsoon intensifies. In this edition of Imperfect Show, we discuss the Chennai rain situation, CM Vijay’s review of relief measures, political criticism of the TVK government and the wider debate over accountability and urban flood preparedness.
