In this clip, Dr. Isabelle Amigues explains some of the signs that can point toward inflammatory back pain, including back pain that begins at a younger age, morning stiffness, symptoms that improve with exercise or movement, and improvement with anti-inflammatory medications.
Inflammatory back pain can sometimes be associated with conditions in the spondyloarthritis family, including ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis. And importantly, psoriatic arthritis can sometimes occur even when obvious psoriasis isn’t present.
The story you tell your rheumatologist matters. Details like when your back pain started, when it feels worse, what makes it better, and whether you have a family history of psoriasis or arthritis can all help guide the conversation.
