Can you truly follow Jesus while remaining disconnected from His church? Is Christianity simply a personal relationship with Christ, or does genuine discipleship require something more?

In Part 2 of our series on discipleship, Jack is once again joined by pastor Ross Turner (The Nerdy Pastor) to explore an often-neglected aspect of the Christian life: the essential role of the local church and covenant community in following Jesus.

Building on the foundation laid in Part 1, Jack and Ross examine how discipleship moves beyond individual faith into a shared pilgrimage with the people of God. Following Christ was never intended to be a solitary pursuit. We are not merely saved as individuals; we are brought into the body of Christ, where we are called to worship, grow, serve, suffer, and persevere together.

But what happens when the church disappoints us? What do we do when fellow Christians hurt us? And why should we remain committed to a community of imperfect sinners when walking away often seems easier?

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why biblical discipleship cannot be separated from the local church

  • The dangers of individualistic Christianity and attempting to follow Jesus alone

  • How baptism and the Lord's Supper shape our identity as God's covenant people

  • Why corporate worship, prayer, and fellowship are essential to spiritual growth

  • The biblical responsibility to bear one another's burdens and pursue unity

  • Why Jesus identifies love—not knowledge, zeal, or religious activity—as the distinguishing mark of His disciples

  • The responsibility of ordinary church members to encourage and disciple one another

  • How to respond to church hurt, disappointment, and the temptation to abandon Christian community

  • Why faithfulness to an imperfect church is often part of God's work of sanctification in our lives

The church isn't a gathering of people who have already arrived at holiness. It's a covenant community of sinners being transformed by the grace of Jesus Christ. And sometimes, the very people who frustrate, disappoint, or wound us become instruments God uses to teach us patience, forgiveness, humility, and love.

Discipleship isn't merely about following Christ. It's about following Christ together.
