What Financial Peace Really Looks Like When You Still Have Debt | Living Dirt Cheap Ep. 40

Dela

Frugal living, saving money, debt-free living, and financial peace don’t happen overnight. In Episode 40, we’re talking about what financial peace actually feels like—and what changes when money stops controlling every decision.

You don’t have to be completely debt free to experience financial peace.

We know because we started building an emergency fund while carrying more than $80,000 in student loan debt, plus Aaron’s existing debt. We remember what a $360 emergency room bill felt like when every paycheck mattered. We also remember the difference it made when our daughter was born and unexpected medical expenses started piling up—but we were able to focus on taking care of her instead of panicking about how we were going to pay the bills.

In this episode of Living Dirt Cheap with the Canny Couple, we’re talking about the less obvious side of getting out of debt and learning to live below your means:

  • What financial peace actually feels like before you reach every financial goal

  • Building an emergency fund while still carrying debt

  • The relief that came with finally paying off debt

  • Why financial peace is a spectrum, not an on/off switch

  • How money anxiety can stick around even after your financial situation improves

  • Lifestyle creep and why groceries became one of our biggest problem areas

  • Learning to increase a grocery budget without abandoning frugal living

  • How we analyze unexpected increases in our electric bill instead of immediately panicking

  • How our budgeting system has evolved over the years

  • Having more freedom to spend money on health and well-being when something actually matters

  • Having more time for family and being present instead of constantly working

  • Learning to say no to expensive obligations without feeling guilty

  • Finding ways to have fun with family and friends without spending a lot of money

  • Breaking generational cycles of money stress

  • Teaching our daughter how to earn, spend, give, save, and handle problems without automatically thinking about the replacement cost

We still watch every penny. We still have goals. We still look for ways to save money. We’re still in a hustle phase—but it isn’t the same desperate hustle we once felt.

Financial peace, for us, isn't about never worrying about money again. It's having enough systems, savings, experience, and breathing room that when something goes wrong, the first question can be “How do we fix this?” instead of “How are we going to afford this?”

This is our real-life journey toward debt-free living, frugal living, financial independence, intentional spending, saving money, and building a calmer relationship with money.
