In this episode of Pucks to Properties, we sit down with Mitch Wahl, former professional hockey player turned real estate professional, to talk about the end of a 17-season playing career and the challenge of building an entirely new career after hockey.
Mitch’s hockey journey took him from Southern California to the Spokane Chiefs, where he won a Memorial Cup, before being selected in the second round of the NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames. He went on to represent the United States at the World Juniors, play professionally in North America, and spend more than a decade playing overseas in Europe.
Now 36 and fresh off his final professional season, Mitch opens up about something every athlete eventually has to face: what comes next? He shares why he wishes he had started preparing for life after hockey earlier, how his priorities changed as he got older and started a family, and what it feels like going from the structure and accountability of professional sports to building your own routine and career.
That next chapter is real estate. Mitch bought his first property in 2018, later earned his real estate license, and has built a portfolio that includes long-term rentals, college housing near Boise State, and a furnished property used as an Airbnb. Today, he and his wife are building their real estate business in Idaho, with Mitch focusing heavily on residential real estate and helping people relocate to the rapidly growing Boise and Treasure Valley area.
Mitch also hasn’t completely left hockey behind. He serves as hockey director of the Boise Skills Academy, allowing him to stay connected to the game while pursuing his next career and helping develop the next generation of players.
From championship runs and injuries to playing overseas, raising a family, investing in property, and starting over professionally, this episode is an honest conversation about identity, purpose, preparation, and building a meaningful life after the game.
