In this episode, Flo talks with Tobias Gustavsson about professional detection dog training, search development, foundations, dog selection, handler influence and the difference between knowing theory and actually being able to train dogs.
Tobias returns to Kynotalk after his first appearance in episode #006. Since then, a lot has changed — but some core ideas have remained the same: good detection dog training takes time, focused repetitions matter, foundations are not the easy part, and motivation, search quality and stamina cannot be replaced by shortcuts.
A major part of the conversation focuses on how professional detection dogs are prepared. Tobias explains why some highly specialized dogs may need many months or even years of structured training, why certain dogs become almost “search machines” for very specific tasks, and why these dogs are not the same as normal single-purpose detection dogs, sport dogs or pet dogs.
Flo and Tobias also talk about the current state of the detection dog industry. While general dog training and sport dog training have improved in many areas, Tobias sees serious problems in search development, handler influence and the assumption that knowing terminology or watching webinars automatically makes someone a better trainer.
