Welcome back to the Homeopathy247 podcast! Today, host Mary Greensmith sits down with homeopath Anjum Rahmatulla, joining us from Edinburgh, Scotland. In this episode, we are tackling one of the most common and important questions out there: Does homeopathy actually work? Anjum shares fascinating research, historical data, and real-life stories that will give you a fresh, evidence-based perspective on natural health.
The Evidence: What the Research Says
Many people assume there is no scientific backing for homeopathy. However, the Homeopathy Research Institute (HRI) has compiled 179 double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials. The results are eye-opening: 41% of these trials were positive, which is surprisingly similar to the 45% positive rate found in conventional medicine trials. The evidence is definitely out there!
A Historic Success in Cuba
One of the most remarkable examples of homeopathy in action occurred in Cuba in 2007. Following severe hurricanes, the country faced a dangerous outbreak of leptospirosis and ran out of conventional vaccines. In response, they turned to homeoprophylaxis, administering a homeopathic remedy to over 2.1 million people. The result was a staggering 90% decrease in the disease within the intervention region—a phenomenal public health success.
Beyond the Placebo Effect
Skeptics often claim that homeopathy is simply a placebo. However, Anjum points out that babies and animals do not experience a placebo effect. She highlights a high-quality trial from the Netherlands where piglets given a homeopathic remedy had six times less diarrhea than those in the placebo group. Mary also shares her own experience of successfully using a simple £4 homeopathic remedy to clear up ringworm in a herd of 30 cows!
Real-Life Transformations
Homeopathy looks at the whole person to restore true balance. Anjum shares a beautiful story of a three-year-old boy who suddenly started bedwetting and became terrified of attending nursery. After discovering his fear was triggered by talk of Halloween monsters, Anjum prescribed a single remedy. Within two days, the bedwetting stopped completely, and his confident, happy personality returned.
