Ticks. Sunburn. Snakes. Germs. For a lot of moms, the outdoors doesn’t feel freeing — it feels dangerous.
In this clip from the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast, Yvette Hampton admits the fear, and Aby Rinella answers it with both wisdom and permission: learn what’s actually in your yard, teach awareness without living afraid, and remember it does not have to be extreme. A blanket in the grass. Watercolors outside. A pot of plants from the garden center. That’s still outdoor life.
Then Yvette tells the story of the day she almost said no to playing in a warm summer downpour — and said yes instead. Her girls still talk about it. Their exchange student was stunned. And that moment became a question every homeschool parent can use: Why not?
They finish with the deeper issue: it is not a parent’s job to make sure children are never bored. Boredom is often what births creativity. And Scripture keeps pointing us back to creation as a place we meet the character of God.
