What happens when a child is gifted and highly capable, yet also struggles with writing, organisation, exams, social interactions or regulation?
In this episode of Being Gifted, we explore the world of twice-exceptional (2e) learners—children whose exceptional strengths and challenges coexist, and can sometimes mask each other.
We are joined by Shija Sapru, a neuroinclusion consultant who uses neuroaffirming and strength-based approaches to support gifted and twice-exceptional individuals. Shija brings over a decade of lived experience supporting her own twice-exceptional children, along with an MS in Organizational Psychology and a Certificate in Twice-Exceptional Education.
Through her work at Tree of Exceptionalities, she supports children, parents, educators, professionals and workplaces in creating environments that recognise strengths while providing the right support for challenges. She is also an alumni research assistant at the S.H.I.N.E. Lab, University of Hartford, Connecticut, and has co-hosted Season 1 of the Neurodiversity MENA Podcast.
In this episode, we explore:
- What twice-exceptionality really means
- Understanding the strengths and challenges of a 2e child
- A real-life case of a 12-year-old with remarkable interests but significant academic and social challenges
- How parents, schools and the wider community can create a supportive ecosystem
- Why a 2e approach must support both strengths and challenges
A conversation that reminds us that a child's abilities and challenges can coexist—and both deserve to be understood.
