In this episode of Insights XChange, Nikesh Gosalia speaks with Ian Mulvaney, Chief Technology Officer at BMJ, about how technology is reshaping scholarly publishing.

Drawing on his experience across BMJ, Springer Nature, Mendeley, eLife, and Sage, Ian shares his journey from physics to technology leadership and reflects on what it takes to drive meaningful digital transformation. The conversation explores how publishers can strengthen trust and research integrity at scale, preserve human judgement, and identify where AI can create genuine value rather than more content, complexity and noise.

Ian also discusses the areas of publishing already suited to AI augmentation, the barriers created by fragmented workflows and data, and why technological progress must ultimately be measured by the positive change it creates.
