Inner child work is one of the most misunderstood tools in Christian healing, and most people are either avoiding it or using it wrong.
When you're in the middle of a conflict with your spouse and you shut down completely, no amount of information helps. You can't access logical thought when your amygdala is hijacked. What you can do is get curious about what's surfacing, because that triggered state is actually carrying information about a wound that never got met with love.
This is the framework Sammi and I have leaned on more than anything else in our own marriage and in the work we do with clients and coaches. We've been through EMDR, ministry school, deliverance, inner healing encounters, therapy of almost every kind. What we kept returning to was this: it's not the original pain that creates the deepest wound. It's the absence of comfort in it.
We talk through what it actually looks like to use this in real life: how to identify what's happening beneath anger, how to follow a current trigger back to something older without digging things up for the sake of it, why inner child work without God will only take you so far, and what goes wrong when awareness stays awareness and never becomes transformation.
We also get honest about our own early marriage, the moments we blamed each other for pain that was already there, and what it took to stop doing that.
