Matt Zupan has built an ultrarunning career around doing a little bit of everything—from massive mountain linkups to some of the most competitive 100-mile races in the country. But his biggest lessons may have come from the races and training blocks that didn’t go according to plan.
Matt gets candid about failure, ego, pacing, expectations, and the mindset shift that helped him show up to Leadville with almost everything working against him. His story is a reminder that a messy training block doesn’t automatically mean a bad race and sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from letting go of what you thought race day had to look like.
You’ll learn: •Why failed attempts can become some of your most valuable training •How to approach a race when your training block falls apart •Why controlling expectations can completely change race day •What mountains can teach you about handling the low points of an ultra •How to balance performance goals with the experiences that keep you motivated
