The animated film Heavy Metal, based on the adult sci-fi fantasy comic magazine of the same name, was released 45 years ago on August 7, 1981, and while it wasn't a big box office smash, it became a cult classic and (at the time) something of a rite of passage. The iconic soundtrack featured great songs by Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Journey, Don Felder, Devo, Stevie Nicks, Grand Funk Railroad, and others. This was a hugely important film for me in the fall after my graduation from high school, and on this week's show, I'll play for you some of my favorite tunes from the album and tell you the stories behind them.
If you remember Heavy Metal from the glory days, or if you're watching it now for the first time, I'd love to hear from you! Drop me a line at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or just leave a comment on our socials or whatever podcast platform you're listening to us.
