Episode 254: Maria Jackson - Helping dental professionals build flexible careers in AI, tech, and innovation

In this episode of the Stress-Free Dentist Podcast, Dr. Eric Block sits down with Maria Jackson — a dental hygienist who built a second career inside dentistry without ever leaving it. Born in Peru and raised in West Palm Beach, Maria is the daughter of a retired oral surgeon and the only one of her siblings drawn to the field. She had already applied to dental school and been accepted when she changed course to hygiene instead, a decision she says her father nearly killed her over. She holds a bachelor's in biology and a bachelor's from the Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport — the first dental hygiene school in the country, founded in 1913 — and practiced full time for over a decade, mostly in DSOs, eventually training hygienists across an entire territory.

The turn came after seven years of IVF. Maria finally got pregnant, then developed carpal tunnel in both hands at six months, so swollen she could barely hold an instrument. She saw a hand specialist on her lunch breaks and went back to see patients, came home in tears every night, and pushed through to her C-section rather than spend her three months of leave recovering instead of with her son. She had surgery on both hands. While working full time with a one-year-old, she finished a master's in digital technology with a concentration in AI and business analytics in under a year and a half, and landed her first job before she graduated. It cost her $30,000 — and she is candid that she probably did not need it.

Maria now consults for early-stage AI companies, giving them the clinical perspective their engineers do not have: what the workflow actually looks like, what patients actually say, where a beautiful piece of software stops making sense at the chair. She works with AIzac, which built a dental-specific large language model and white-labels it along with speech-to-text and perio charting. And she coaches other dental professionals through the same pivot she made — deliberately without the degree she paid for.
