In this documentary, Paul Anthony Wallis explores the extraordinary and often overlooked story of the Cathars, in a film produced by Anthony Barrett. A spiritual movement that flourished in medieval Europe, the Cathars eventually became the target of a brutal campaign of persecution.
But this is about more than a forgotten chapter of religious history. The Cathars challenged accepted ideas about spiritual authority, wealth, power, equality and our relationship with the divine. Their communities offered an alternative way of thinking and living, one that brought them into direct conflict with some of the most powerful institutions of their age.
What was it about their ideas that made them such a threat? And why might their story still matter today?
