Dylan Rounds was a 19-year-old farmer from Idaho who had spent years working toward the goal of building a farming operation of his own in the remote desert around Lucin, Utah. Born in 2002 and raised around agriculture, Rounds had been described by his family as intensely hardworking, independent and almost singularly focused on farming. In 2019, while still a teenager, he partnered with his grandfather on land near Lucin and spent the next several years preparing the ground, moving irrigation equipment and getting the property ready to produce crops. By the spring of 2022, he had finally reached the point where he could plant his first crop, triticale, and had been working late into the night trying to get the seed in before rain moved through the area.
Rounds disappeared on May 28, 2022, shortly after speaking with his grandmother from the Lucin area, beginning a massive search that eventually turned into a murder investigation. James Brenner, who had been living near Rounds’ farm, was later charged with killing him and, as part of a plea agreement in 2024, led investigators to Rounds’ remains in a remote section of western Utah. Brenner subsequently pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to prison. Rounds’ family later created Dylan’s Legacy in his memory, both to preserve the story of the ambitious young farmer he had been and to support other families dealing with missing-person and homicide cases.
