Your Soul Is Already Pure… So What Are You Here to Fix? Devarim

 If someone told you that your soul is already pure, you
might ask a very reasonable question: If that’s true, then what exactly am I
here to fix? This morning’s Breakfast & a Class
grew out of a question asked after Shaharit—a question that opened the door to
one of the most profound teachings of the Ben Ish Ḥai. Together we explore the
purity of the neshamah, the purpose of our lives, the meaning of tikkun,
and why each of us has been entrusted with a unique mission that no one else
can fulfill. 

What
made the morning especially meaningful was what happened after the class. A few
people who rarely attend synagogue happened to be there, and I wondered whether
such a deep topic might be too much. Instead, they came over afterward to say
how much the discussion spoke to them. Later that day, while I was at the
cemetery, the conversation continued as one person shared the ideas with
others, leading to an entirely new discussion about reincarnation and the
journey of the soul. Sometimes HaShem reminds us that the people who need to
hear a particular message are exactly the people He sends to hear it. I hope
this class leaves you with the same question to ponder tomorrow morning as you
recite Elokai Neshamah:
If my soul is already pure, what mission has HaShem entrusted to me today?
