Can someone become a truly great leader without first understanding themselves?
In the second part of Sara’s conversation with international leadership coach, mentor, speaker, and co-author of Networking Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint, Phil Berg, the discussion moves from building external relationships to the most fundamental starting point of leadership:
Who am I? Why have I become the person I am today? And what am I truly pursuing?
Phil reflects on his early experience as a young football player and his lifelong desire for excellence, recognition, and continuous self-improvement. His determination to become the best version of himself has helped him overcome adversity and achieve more. Yet, when taken too far, that same drive can leave a person feeling that nothing they do is ever good enough.
From a strengths-coaching perspective, Sara explores how the pursuit of excellence can become both a leadership strength and a blind spot. It can inspire a team to move from good to exceptional—but it can also create an environment in which employees feel that their leader is never satisfied.
Mature leadership requires recognizing the difference between one’s internal feelings and external delivery. A leader may feel frustrated, impatient, or disappointed, but still choose to communicate in a way that others can understand, receive, and act upon.
The conversation also turns to life purpose. Phil shares one of his most memorable “Bergisms”:
“Die with a plan.”
Life will eventually end for all of us. What matters is whether we have truly lived—with desires, purpose, and a plan—or simply existed.
Toward the end of the episode, Phil turns the interview around and asks Sara why she wrote Life Strategy Equation. Sara speaks about strengths, passion, value, and helping others—but Phil challenges her to go deeper:
“That may be your goal—but is it truly your why?”
This author-to-author and coach-to-coach conversation goes beyond becoming a better leader. It invites us to keep asking: Behind all our goals, achievements, and aspirations to create an impact, what is truly driving us?
