In the torchlit halls of Machaerus, Herod Antipas celebrates amid wine, music, and intrigue. Under the watchful manipulation of her mother, Herodias, the young Salome performs a mesmerizing dance before the tetrarch and his guests. Intoxicated and enthralled, Antipas rashly swears to grant her whatever she desires. But the request whispered into Salome’s ear by her mother turns the revelry to horror: the head of John the Baptist.
Deep beneath the fortress, Brigomarus realizes what is about to happen. Haunted by his own bloody past and determined never again to stand aside while an innocent dies, the aging Gallic warrior attempts to stop Antipas’ executioner. He fights desperately, but is overwhelmed. As John is led away, the prophet refuses rescue and instead blesses Brigomarus, telling him that the Lord has seen his heart. Moments later, imprisoned in John’s empty cell, Brigomarus hears the fatal stroke of the executioner’s sword.
Above, the terrible consequence of Antipas’ oath is carried into the banquet hall. John’s severed head is presented beneath a mound of white chrysanthemums. Salome recoils in horror, while Herodias savours what she believes to be her victory. Yet there is no triumph. The guests respond with revulsion and dread, and Antipas realizes that the prophet he ordered killed has become something far more powerful, a martyr whose words now haunt him more fiercely than ever.
Alone in the darkness, Brigomarus confronts his grief and the guilt he has carried since the massacre at Bethlehem. Remembering John’s message of repentance, he begins to understand that the past need not remain a prison. As dawn approaches beyond the walls of Machaerus, he senses that although the voice crying in the wilderness has fallen silent, the Word it proclaimed is only beginning to speak.
Before sunrise, Shoshanna arrives with Andrew and several of John’s followers. Secretly acting on the remorseful Salome’s orders, they free Brigomarus and recover the Baptist’s remains. They carry John from the fortress and lay him reverently in a hidden tomb among the desert hills. Salome, meanwhile, has fled Machaerus, unable to bear what her mother compelled her to do.
Standing before John’s sealed tomb in the light of a new morning, Brigomarus knows what he must do. The Baptist’s mission is finished, but the man John proclaimed still walks the roads of Israel. With Andrew beside him, Brigomarus turns north toward Galilee to seek Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth.
