In this episode, Gardika speaks with Dr. Laverne de la Peña, a distinguished ethnomusicologist, composer, and director of the University of the Philippines Centre for Ethnomusicology. The conversation centers on de la Peña’s collaborative composition Si Siwan Si Siwan, a music theatre piece inspired by Filipino folklore and performed through a dynamic interplay of voice, puppetry, and percussion. The piece serves as a case study to examine the fluid boundaries between tradition and innovation, offering insights into how contemporary artists navigate and reinterpret Southeast Asian sonic heritage.
