CARRYING THE PARTON LEGACY: MUSIC, GRIEF & BECOMING HEIDI | HEIDI PARTON'S STORY | EPISODE 117

What does it look like to inherit a legacy without losing yourself inside of it?

Heidi Parton was born into a family whose music has reached generations. As the daughter of the late Randy Parton and niece of Dolly Parton, music, creativity, faith, and performance have been woven into Heidi's story since she was a little girl. She stepped onto a Dollywood stage at just four years old and has spent more than 20 years performing. But behind the Parton name is a woman who has had to discover, again and again, who Heidi is.

In this episode of Created Worthy, Heidi opens up about her humble beginnings, growing up alongside her dad at Dollywood, navigating tremendous grief after losing her sister and father, learning to become her own friend, rebuilding her relationship with herself, and discovering what it means to honor the family she comes from without becoming lost in the expectations attached to her name. We also dive into her album Reflections, a deeply personal project that brought decades-old songs written by members of her family back to life and allowed Heidi to add her own voice to a legacy generations in the making.

This conversation was recorded many months before the passing of Heidi's Aunt Dolly on August 25, 2026. Listening back now, Heidi's words about Dolly, her dad, music, family, grief, and legacy carry a weight neither of us could have anticipated when we sat down to record. Because legacy isn't only what someone leaves behind. It's what those of us still living choose to carry forward.

No matter what name you carry, what has been handed down to you, what you have lost, or what parts of yourself you are still discovering...

YOU are Created Worthy.

CREATIVE PROCESSING DEFINED

Creative Processing is activating your creative mind to process a certain intention.

You are probably already doing it without realizing it.

It might look like writing, painting, singing, cooking, organizing, gardening, taking photos, moving your body, making something with your hands, or simply putting on a song and allowing yourself to actually feel what comes up.

In this episode, Heidi talks about music as something that has helped her process grief, joy, memory, identity, and connection. She shares that sometimes a song can reach an emotion she couldn't access any other way.

"Music is always that thing that when you don't know what to do, it saves you."

CREATIVE PROCESSING CHALLENGE: PROCESSING LEGACY THROUGH MUSIC

For this week's Creative Processing Challenge, I want you to use something incredibly accessible:

A song.

Choose one song connected to a person, season, place, relationship, or memory that has shaped your life.

Before you press play, give your creativity an intention:

"The purpose of listening to this song is to process __________."

Maybe it is:

The purpose of listening to this song is to process my dad.

The purpose of listening to this song is to process where I came from.

The purpose of listening to this song is to process grief.

The purpose of listening to this song is to process the legacy I want to carry forward.

Then:

1. Listen.
Give the song your full attention. No scrolling. No multitasking. Just listen.

2. Notice.
What memories come up? What happens in your body? Do you smile? Cry? Feel angry? Remember something you haven't thought about in years?

You don't have to force an emotion. Your job is simply to notice.

3. Create.
When the song ends, spend a few minutes responding creatively. Journal. Draw. Sing. Pray. Write down a memory. Make something. Move your body. Whatever feels natural.

Then ask yourself:

What did this song help me remember?

What have I inherited from the people who came before me?

What do I want to carry forward?

What am I allowed to leave behind?

What am I adding to the legacy that was handed to me?

Heidi talks about hearing pieces of her dad in her own voice and realizing that while she has the unmistakable Parton family sound, she also has a sound that belongs to her. Transcript - CW - Heidi Parton

Maybe that's the invitation for us too.

Honor what came before you.

Carry forward what is good.

And give yourself permission to add your own voice.

You got this!
