If your legs start burning, aching, or feeling weak when you walk or stand, but the symptoms improve when you sit down or lean forward, you may be experiencing a pattern associated with lumbar spinal stenosis.
Spinal stenosis occurs when spaces around the nerves in your spine become narrowed. For some people, standing upright and walking can aggravate leg symptoms, while sitting or bending forward provides relief. This is often called neurogenic claudication.
But spinal stenosis isn't the same for everyone, and simply knowing you have stenosis doesn't tell you exactly which exercises are right for you.
In this episode, Dr. Grant Elliott from Rehab Fix explains how spinal stenosis can cause lower back pain, leg pain, and walking difficulties, and walks you through 3 exercises designed to improve spinal control and build strength to support everyday movement.
🔷 What lumbar spinal stenosis is and how it affects the nerves
🔷 Why leg pain or weakness may get worse when walking or standing
🔷 Why sitting or leaning forward may relieve symptoms
🔷 Exercise #1: Knees to Chest for comfortable lumbar flexion
🔷 Exercise #2: Dead Bug for core and pelvic stability
🔷 Exercise #3: Bear Exercise for controlled spinal stability
🔷 How to modify exercise positions to avoid excessive back arching
🔷 Why mobility, stability, and progressive strengthening all matter
