Why would someone voluntarily join a group that dramatically increases their exposure to violence, arrest and incarceration? The answer is rarely as simple as wanting to become a criminal. Gang membership can involve identity, protection, friendship, family relationships, neighborhood conditions, status and perceived opportunity. Different members may also join the same gang for very different reasons. Understanding recruitment requires examining the social environment in which the decision occurs.
