This is one of the most moving conversations we’ve had on Here for the Truth, and among the hardest to hold. Kate Gladdin has taught resilience to more than 300,000 people, and she has no patience for the version of it that asks you to find the silver lining. Named one of Australia’s 100 Women of Influence, she came to this work through loss she would undo in a heartbeat if she could, and can’t. She rejects the idea that resilience means bouncing back; we’re not bouncy balls, she says, and there is rarely a way back to who you were. Her claim is bracing: there is often no good in what happened to you. The good is what you build from the pieces you’re left holding.
