On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a black woman, was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. Following the arrest, boycotts lasted over a year in what would be known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This movement would be a major step in the dismantling of the Jim Crow South and bringing about political equality between white and black Americans.
