S6 143 - Do Sleep Trackers Really Know How You Slept? Oura Ring, Apple Watch & the Science
Do your Oura Ring, Apple Watch, Fitbit, or Garmin actually know when you’re asleep, or are they making an educated guess?
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony break down what sleep trackers really measure, how those measurements compare with a clinical sleep study, and why your nightly sleep score may not be as precise as it looks.
We also examine the proposed class action lawsuit involving Oura’s sleep-stage accuracy claims, what Oura says in response, and what the research actually tells us about consumer sleep wearables.
You’ll learn:
💍 What the Oura Ring actually measures
Movement, heart rate, heart-rate variability, temperature, oxygen-related signals, and other physiologic data can tell us a lot, but they are not the same thing as directly measuring brain activity.
🧠 How sleep is measured in a real sleep laboratory
Michelle explains polysomnography, or PSG, including EEG brain waves, eye movements, muscle tone, breathing, oxygen levels, airflow, and other signals used to determine sleep and sleep stages.
⌚ Oura Ring vs. Apple Watch vs. Fitbit vs. Garmin
Why consumer wearables may be quite useful for identifying broader sleep patterns while being less reliable when estimating exactly how much REM, deep sleep, or light sleep you obtained on a particular night.
⚖️ What is the Oura lawsuit about?
We discuss allegations involving Oura’s marketing of sleep-stage accuracy, Oura’s response, and why comparing wearable algorithms with polysomnography is more complicated than it may initially seem.
📊 Why total sleep time may be more useful than sleep-stage percentages
Wearables often perform better at estimating whether you are asleep or awake than determining exactly which stage of sleep you are experiencing.
😰 When sleep tracking becomes orthosomnia
For some people, constantly checking sleep scores can increase anxiety about sleep and ironically make sleeping more difficult.
Our rule for sleep trackers
Use your sleep tracker as information, not instruction.
Instead of reacting to a single night's score, look for patterns over several weeks and pay attention to how you actually feel and function during the day.
A wearable can be a useful tool.
It should not become the judge of whether you had a “good” or “bad” night of sleep.
👇 Do you use an Oura Ring, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, or another sleep tracker?
Tell us in the comments whether your sleep score usually matches how you actually feel the next day.
