Audio reading: Num 25:10-18, 1 Chron 28:1-29:30, Rom 5:6-21, Psalm 15:1-5, Prov 19:18-19
This episode examines Numbers 25, where Pinchas kills an Israelite and a Midianite woman who are engaged in sexual immorality in front of the entire nation and in total defiance to God. He pierces them through with a spear, and he is awarded a "covenant of peace." We look at the paradox of violent action leading to divine peace and we ask the question: can peace be achieved through strength? When is it appropriate to use force to bring forth peace? This is especially timely and relevant now as Israel is in a war with her far away enemies (Iran) and her near enemies (Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis).
Our reading today also covers David’s preparations for the Temple and his charge to Solomon to build it, the anointing of Solomon, and related readings from Romans, Psalms, and Proverbs that reflect on atonement, righteousness, and leadership.
