The Quiet Loss of Being Expected explores one of grief’s most ordinary and easily overlooked absences: losing the person who noticed whether you were home, expected your call, listened to the details of your day, or simply accounted for you in their life. Tim reflects on widowhood, his sister’s instinct to call their parents after their deaths, and the new stillness of an empty nest to consider how deeply the people we love become woven into our everyday rhythms. Along the way, he introduces the idea of “changing the camera angle”—not as a way to erase loss or force a more positive perspective, but as something that may happen as we grow and live with grief over time. The loss remains true, but from somewhere new, we may begin to notice that grief, love, loneliness, growth, and even possibility can exist in the same frame.
