What happens when you know all the tools, understand what you’re experiencing, and still can’t find your way out?

After several weeks of experiencing anger and rage at a level I had never experienced before, I finally feel like myself again. And now that I’m on the other side of it, I can see things I simply couldn’t see while I was in it.

In this episode of Cacao Conversations, Dorice and I talk about what it’s like to be consumed by an emotion you can’t simply breathe, meditate, reframe, forgive, or “let go” your way out of.

We talk about why we’re so uncomfortable with emotions like anger, rage, grief, hatred and deep sadness, and why our desire to help someone feel better can sometimes become pressure for them to move through something before they’re ready.

I also share the harder part of what comes afterward: the shame, guilt, regret and disgust over things I said while I was angry, and the difference between honoring what I was feeling and taking responsibility for what I did with those feelings.

We talk about what it really means to hold space for someone when you can’t make it better, the incredible gift of the people who can stay present without trying to rush the process, and what this experience has taught me after decades of helping other people through their own pain.

Sometimes you can have every tool in the toolbox and still not be able to find your way out.

What if, in those moments, we need fewer people telling us how to get out and more people willing to sit beside us while we find our own way through?
