Dave is Head of Distribution Development at Black Horse, part of Lloyds Banking Group. He leads the team responsible for OEM partnership development, strategic growth initiatives and distribution development, helping bring new opportunities to life across the business. Before stepping into this role, he spent time leading the Jaguar Land Rover Financial Services team. He joined Lloyds from BMW Financial Services, where he spent twelve years moving through nine different roles.
In our conversation we talk about Dave's upbringing in Keighley, West Yorkshire, as the oldest of three, raised by two police officers who met on the job. We explore his school years, and how genuine interest in a subject always brought out his best work, including moving schools to pursue his choice of A levels, and how it wasn't until university that he was diagnosed with dyslexia.
We trace his path to Loughborough to study maths, two summers spent working Camp America, and on to a PhD at Nottingham. We discuss his rowing career, training alongside his now-wife Emily, who went on to compete at the London 2012 Olympics, and what it took to recognise when it was time to move on to the next chapter.
We then move into his twelve years at BMW Financial Services, the early lessons in autonomy and communication that shaped his leadership style, and the move to the JLR Financial Services team and then a wider role within Lloyds Bank, including building a new Centre of Excellence from scratch. We finish with his leadership philosophy: setting a clear "why," trusting people to get on with it, and staying genuinely present with the people who matter, both at work and at home.
