Welcome to Mapping Evil, the special 13-episode Profiling Evil series recorded in a studio in #Australia, where I'm joined by award-winning journalist #ToriShepherd. In this first episode we take on Robert Ben Rhoades, the truck stop killer, a sexual sadist who turned his big white 18-wheeler into a traveling torture chamber. Rhoades told one victim he'd been doing this for 15 years, and investigators believe they still haven't found them all.
We walk through his victims, including young missionaries Patricia Candice Walsh and Douglas Zyskowski, and Nicole Tuttle, who found the courage to bail out of his truck in Houston with chains still hanging off her, leading to his arrest. Then the geography, because that's where this case was finally cracked. With more than 18,000 separate police departments in America and almost no information sharing in those days, Rhoades crossed jurisdictions faster than anyone could connect the dots, until Mike mapped his truck stop records, weigh stations and fuel stops against missing persons across the country. The pattern suggests anywhere from 50 to 300 victims.
We close in Australia with the Flinders Highway, what Tori calls a serial place rather than a serial person, looking at the 1982 disappearance of 20-year-old backpacker Toni Jones and the murders of the MacKay sisters, and why victimology tells Mike these were not the work of one killer.
