In this episode of Profiling Evil, I sit down with Sarah Edmondson and Anthony “Nippy” Ames from A Little Bit Culty for a raw and honest conversation about cult behavior, coercive control, undue influence and the slow erosion of personal autonomy. They were inside NXIVM, the organization led by Keith Raniere, who was convicted in federal court in 2019 of racketeering, sex trafficking, attempted sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy and other crimes. In 2020, Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in prison.
But this conversation isn’t just about NXIVM. It’s about how control can be disguised as self-improvement, leadership training, discipline, personal growth, spiritual development or belonging. Sarah and Nippy explain how people don’t usually walk into a destructive group knowing what it really is. They walk in because they’re looking for purpose, community, answers, confidence, healing or a better version of themselves. That’s what makes this discussion so important. We talk about the first hooks, the love bombing, the status systems, the pressure to ignore red flags, the “us versus them” thinking, the sunk cost fallacy, the fear of admitting you were wrong and the painful moment when a person finally realizes the leader is not who they claimed to be.
Sarah shares how her intuition warned her early, but how those warnings were slowly trained out of her. Nippy talks about susceptibility, blind spots, loyalty, shame and why assuming “that could never happen to me” may be one of the most dangerous beliefs a person can carry.
Their podcast, A Little Bit Culty, focuses on helping people understand, heal from and avoid abusive systems “one little red flag at a time,” and their book, A Little Bit Culty, is described as a guide to understanding how manipulation and control take hold, and how people can begin to break free.
From a criminal behavior perspective, this episode looks at how predatory personalities study vulnerability. They don’t always begin with threats. Often, they begin with charm, praise, status, access and the promise that you can become something better if you’ll just trust the process. That’s where control gets dangerous. Not when it looks obvious, but when it looks helpful. This is a conversation for parents, students, true crime followers, faith communities, business leaders, coaches, creators and anyone who wants to better understand coercive control before it reaches the point of crisis. Because cult tactics aren’t limited to cults. They can show up in relationships, workplaces, political movements, wellness groups, online communities, business cultures and anywhere a person uses trust to gain power over someone else.
