Makissa is a proud veteran having served 11 years in the United States Army to include one combat tour to Iraq. Her experiences includes helping train Iraqi law enforcement and firefighters on how to safely treat and transport injured women.
Always challenging herself, Makissa ended her military career and decided to pursue a Masters degree in Higher Education Administration. She went on to serve as the first National Educational Director for the nonprofit, National Women Veteran of America Association. In that role she opened communication between community stakeholders and female veterans. For her continued mission of service, Makissa was recognized by Legacy Magazine as one of their 40 under 40 Black Leaders of Today and Tomorrow.
As the Founder and CEO of the nonprofit, My Seester, Inc. , Makissa has made it her mission to make sure South Florida female veterans are not only seen, but also heard.
