You can be the most dependable person in the room and still be quietly falling apart.
Many mid-career professionals have built their reputations by being capable, responsive, and willing to solve difficult problems. But when you become the person everyone relies on, your competence can turn into a trap. More work comes your way, other people’s emergencies become your responsibility, and saying yes becomes almost automatic.
In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I sit down with Tammie Calys, executive reinvention architect and founder of Next Level Me, to discuss what she calls the curse of competence.
After decades of leading corporate strategy and large-scale organizational change, Tammie learned a dangerous truth: high-achieving leaders are often excellent at mitigating risk for their organizations while ignoring the risks to their own capacity, health, relationships, and careers.
We explore the fear, uncertainty, and guilt many mid-career professionals are experiencing in the 2026 job market. You may want a new job or career change, but feel guilty pursuing something better while colleagues are being laid off or displaced. You may also be staying in an unhealthy situation because the uncertainty of leaving feels more frightening than the cost of remaining.
Tammie explains how high performers become the default solution for every workplace problem and why being dependable does not mean you must absorb every new responsibility. She also shares specific boundary-setting scripts that allow you to protect your time and capacity without damaging trust or appearing uncooperative.
You will learn how to use a 24-hour pause to interrupt the reflexive yes, initiate a trade-off conversation that forces meaningful prioritization, and offer alternative solutions without taking ownership of the entire problem.
We also discuss the early warning signs of silent cracking, including phantom presence, when you are physically with the people you care about but remain mentally consumed by work. Tammie explains why remote and hybrid professionals need a deliberate workday shutdown ritual and a transition bridge that helps them move from professional responsibilities into their personal lives.
This conversation is not simply about saying no. It is about leading yourself more intentionally, protecting your professional capacity, and making career decisions before you reach a breaking point.
In This Episode, You Will Learn:
• Why fear and guilt in the 2026 job market keep mid-career professionals stuck
• How the curse of competence turns top performers into the default fix for every problem
• A 24-hour pause script that prevents an automatic yes
• Three ways to say no while remaining supportive and collaborative
• How to use trade-off conversations to help leaders establish real priorities
• Why microhabits and evidence from your own history can strengthen your confidence
• How silent cracking and phantom presence affect your personal relationships
• How to create a workday shutdown ritual for remote and hybrid work
• Why knowing your north star is essential for career clarity and professional reinvention
• How to advocate for yourself before exhaustion, resentment, or burnout forces a decision
Your job may feel secure today, but that does not mean you should leave your career direction entirely in someone else’s hands. Knowing your values, strengths, boundaries, and professional north star helps you make intentional decisions instead of waiting for a crisis.
