In this episode of The History of the Bible, we enter 1 Samuel chapter 4 and one of the darkest moments in Israel's history. The Philistines once again go to war against Israel, leading us to examine the battlefield at Aphek and Ebenezer and what warfare looked like in the early Iron Age. We also explore the size of armies during this period and the Hebrew word 'eleph, normally translated “thousand,” and the possibility that it could refer to a military unit rather than a literal thousand soldiers. After suffering a devastating defeat, Israel's elders make a desperate decision: they bring the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh into battle, believing its presence will guarantee victory. Instead, Israel is defeated again. Hophni and Phinehas are killed, the Ark is captured, and Eli dies after hearing the news. Then comes the birth of Ichabod and the declaration, “The glory has departed from Israel.” But has God really been defeated? As the Ark leaves Israel and enters Philistine territory, the story takes an unexpected turn.
