George Mackay Brown was extremely rare in being an Orcadian who became a Catholic, and for many he is one of the most important Catholic poets and writers of the twentieth century. He rarely left his native islands and, in the words of Seamus Heaney, "transforms everything by passing it through the eye of the needle of Orkney". Sent to interview him for The Times in 1992, Maggie Fergusson became Brown's friend, and he gave her his blessing to write his biography. George Mackay Brown: The Life, published twenty years ago, has never since been out of print, and won four prizes. Brown remains central to Maggie's thinking and faith.
