The Future of Neuroimaging: AI, Brain Networks & Better Clinical Decisions | Dr. Abigail Livny-Ezer, Ph.D. - Director, C.BIRD Center (Clinical Brain Imaging Research & Development Center) - Sheba Medical Center
The brain is one of the most complex systems in biology, and understanding it requires more than a picture of its anatomy. We need to understand its connections, activity, and response to injury.
Today we're going to ask a fascinating question: Can advanced neuroimaging and artificial intelligence give us a much better understanding of what happens to the brain after injury and disease - and ultimately help physicians make better decisions for individual patients?
Dr. Abigail Livny-Ezer, Ph.D. is a neuroscientist, neuropsychologist, and expert in clinical neuroimaging.
Dr. Livny-Ezer is the Director of the C.BIRD Center - Clinical Brain Imaging Research & Development Center ( https://www.cbirdcenter.com/ ) at Sheba Medical Center in Israel, where her research focuses on brain pathologies and, in particular, how the brain reorganizes itself in response to acute and chronic neurological disease and injury - and how those changes in brain structure and function relate to cognitive outcomes.
Dr. Livny-Ezer earned her master's degree in neuropsychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her PhD in neuroscience, specializing in MRI brain imaging, from Tel Aviv University. Her work has included traumatic brain injury, brain connectivity, neuroplasticity, cognitive decline, and the use of advanced imaging and computational approaches to improve diagnosis and prognosis.
Dr. Livny-Ezer's research has gone well beyond simply looking for visible brain damage. Using techniques including functional MRI, diffusion imaging and connectomics, she and her collaborators have investigated how injury can alter the networks through which different regions of the brain communicate - and how those network changes can relate to cognitive function.
And now Dr. Livny-Ezer's taking another major step - from understanding the brain to helping physicians treat it.
Dr. Livny-Ezer is also the Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Sightendo ( https://www.sightendo.com/ ), a medical technology company developing AI-powered, real-time decision support for minimally invasive neuro-endovascular procedures. The company's technology is designed to analyze angiographic imaging during procedures and provide quantitative information and visualizations to physicians in real time - a kind of additional set of AI-powered eyes in the interventional suite.
Today we're going to talk about how the injured brain reorganizes itself, what modern neuroimaging can actually tell us about that process, where AI fits into the picture, and whether we are approaching a future in which brain imaging becomes not just diagnostic - but genuinely predictive and personalized.
