Episode Title: 🇺🇸Meaning?!🇺🇸

Human Premium. The Last Human Layer

Another rather fascinating episode in the Heads Talk® Power Series, and one that takes the conversation somewhere very human.

This episode was recorded in early spring. Its release was delayed by the long digital detox and other events, but it was well worth the wait. I thoroughly enjoyed this discussion with Allison J. Pugh, Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University, 2026 Guggenheim Fellow and author of the award-winning The Last Human Job: The Work of Connecting in a Disconnected World.

As we unpack Allison’s thinking on connective labour, the role of humans today, what dignity means in our time, and how we contend with the growing power and influence of algorithms, we begin to question what happens to the human elements that systems cannot easily measure, quantify or replace.

Her work asks us to look beyond what systems measure and notice the human effort that makes those systems work.

At the heart of our conversation is Allison's concept of connective labour: the often invisible work of building trust, understanding, empathy and connection. We explore why this labour remains so undervalued, and what happens when the systems we design begin extracting those human qualities while simultaneously automating the very interactions that give them meaning.

Then we get into the less visible power: algorithms, feeds, AI and systems that are always on. Who is shaping whom? What happens when people increasingly feel processed rather than seen? And, perhaps most provocatively, could meaningful human connection itself become a luxury, available to those who can afford it?

We also ask what happens to dignity, identity and purpose if AI removes more of the work through which people currently derive meaning. Universal basic income may answer an economic question. But does it answer the human one?

As Allison puts it rather bluntly: switch off. At least for a period every week. What better advice is there for the situation we find ourselves in today?

A conversation about technology, power and progress, yes. But ultimately, it is about us. What we value. What we preserve. And what we risk losing while marvelling at what machines can do.

A fascinating conversation, and one I would happily have again.
