Episode 088 — Moose Hunt, Film & Gear Prep

The Northern BC hunt is getting close, and it’s time to figure out how the hell we’re actually going to pull this thing off.

Devin and Curt are joined by Dalton Petersen of Northern Son Media, who’ll be behind the camera for this fall’s Northern BC adventure. The boys break down the plan for a remote moose hunt with the possibility of chasing late-season sheep — starting from a wall tent base camp, but staying ready to spike out when the hunt demands it.

They get into the realities of preparing for remote northern country: cold weather, freezing water, river crossings, grizzlies, gear failures, long days and everything that can go sideways when you’re a long way from home.

In this episode:

  • Wall tent base camp vs. being ready to spike out

  • Building a sleep system for cold Northern BC nights

  • Water filtration and storage when temperatures drop below freezing

  • Trucks, quads, walking-beam trailers, winches, chains and spare parts

  • .300 PRCs, bullet choice and rifle setup for moose and mountain hunting

  • Dalton’s approach to filming hunts from inside the experience

  • Keeping the film raw and authentic while stepping up the production quality

  • Lessons Dalton has learned filming goats, sheep and other tough backcountry hunts

  • Finding the balance between an old-school moose camp and bringing enough comfort to actually enjoy two weeks in the bush

Dalton also gives us a look at how he approaches hunt films — capturing the bullshit, camp life, struggles and personalities along with the kill. The goal isn’t to manufacture a story. It’s to put the cameras in the middle of the hunt and let the story happen.

This one is part gear talk, part hunt planning and part figuring shit out before three guys disappear into Northern BC for two weeks.

Moose. Sheep. Cameras. Cold weather. Questionable decisions.

Sounds like a Come Out Heavy hunt.
