A steady number on the scale doesn’t necessarily mean your body is unchanged. Learn why muscle quality, strength and body composition matter when assessing midlife health—and what to protect during weight loss.

Sarcopenic obesity brings together two changes that are often considered separately: declining muscle mass or function and excess body fat. Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher explain how those changes can occur without a dramatic shift in body weight. Their discussion moves beyond muscle size to quality, including fat infiltration and the ability to climb stairs, maintain balance and get out of a chair.

The practical framework is to consider muscle mass, muscle function and body fat together, rather than treating BMI or a scale reading as a complete assessment. Fisher also distinguishes lean mass from muscle and explains why strength and size may change at different rates. Strength training and dietary protein feature as ways to support muscle preservation, including during substantial weight loss or GLP-1 use.
