Episode 312 - Before he ever drew a frame of Roger Rabbit, Greg Manwaring was a kid on a U.S. Army base in Würzburg, Germany, teaching himself magic from library books. In part one of this two-part conversation, animator and director Greg Manwaring traces his unlikely road into animation, illustrating magic books for legends like Dai Vernon while still a student at CalArts, selling an illusion idea to Doug Henning, studying under the Disney greats, and breaking into the studios during the Roger Rabbit era through Amblimation and Ren & Stimpy.
Manwaring's animation credits include three consensus all-time greats: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Lion King, and The Iron Giant, plus An American Tail, Fievel Goes West, Ferngully, The Tigger Movie, and the Oscar-nominated The Illusionist.
