About This Episode
In this episode, Hilmarie sits down with Marlene “Marms” Hope to explore resilience, operational clarity, and what happens when life forces you to rebuild from the ground up. Marms shares how leaving South Africa, living across multiple countries, and later experiencing the collapse of a startup while both she and her husband went unpaid pushed her into one of the most uncertain periods of her life. Those experiences strengthened a belief she carries today: even when the path ahead is unclear, there is always a way forward.
The conversation also explores how Marms’ difficult childhood shaped her independence, problem-solving ability, and instinct to create order from chaos. She reflects on how survival mode can become a strength, but also why extreme independence and constantly being the strong one can eventually carry an emotional cost. That understanding now influences how she leads, works with founders, and approaches her own personal growth.
Marms breaks down the hidden cost of hustle culture and explains why founders often become the biggest bottleneck in their own businesses. She shares practical strategies including buying back time through delegation, blocking Mondays and Fridays to work on rather than inside her business, protecting team culture, and even firing clients when a relationship compromises operational integrity.
At its core, this episode is about building resilience through experience, learning when to ask for help, and creating enough structure and support to move from constant reaction into intentional execution.

Quotes
2:12 - When you step out of those comfort zones and step out of that world and into something bigger and greater, it changes you. It shakes you a little bit. It brings a different kind of reality back to you that you never knew existed.
6:15 - When I made the decision to move out of the house, that shaped me to become something that I never ever thought I would be able to become. I think I've always been in survival mode my whole life, and I've always had to just take care of me.
8:37 - I learned to be better and I got joy out of being better and becoming better and being able to look after myself and be independent.
11:17 - When you're in a situation like that, someone has to keep it together. I've been through enough in my life that looking at that situation at face value when I was in it, that was nothing for me. That was just one more thing on the list that I had to just push through because I knew that the outcome of that was going to be good.
11:46 - I've navigated through enough in my life to know that no matter what, you just have to push through it because it gives you growth. You're learning something through that, and everything will be okay on the other side. What that okay looks like, no one knows. But there will be okay on the other side.
12:36 - You do have a choice. Everything that you do and everything that you shape in the future is based off that choice that you make. And the choices that I made back then by blocking stuff out and all of that were good choices, as unhealthy as it was, because it helped not just only me get through stuff, but it helps someone else, my husband, get through something that he has never ever experienced a level of trauma.
13:06 - I pulled myself together to be and pretend to be okay, so that I could help someone else be okay. That's the joy there.
22:00 -If you are not in control of what's happening inside of you, you cannot build success on the outside.
23:41 - If you buy time, you have to spend the money to buy that time. And time is the most valuable asset that you will ever, ever have in your life. Because that is where ideas come from. That is where growth comes from. That is where love comes from. That is where anything in the world is based off time. Money can buy that for you. And my that's what I mean by that is like if you have people or support or someone that you can rely on to do that for you, that gives you the time to not burn out. That gives you the time to focus on things that you are actually truly good at.
31:22 - I know the level and the caliber of person that I want to be part of our ecosystem.
33:35 - Setting time for yourself and just slowing down makes you move faster.
