Hebrews 7 shows why returning to the Levitical system would be spiritual regression.
Melchizedek was both king of righteousness and king of peace, and his priesthood existed before the Law, before Levi, and before Aaron.
Abraham, the great patriarch, gave Melchizedek a tenth of the spoils and received a blessing from him. Hebrews explains the significance plainly:
The lesser is blessed by the greater.
Even Levi, still in Abraham’s loins, is said to have paid tithes through Abraham. Therefore, the Levitical priesthood itself acknowledged the superiority of Melchizedek’s priesthood.
The writer’s point is clear: Christ’s priesthood, according to the order of Melchizedek, is greater than the Aaronic priesthood.
Why return to the lesser when the greater High Priest has come?
